Installing Ant

Get the latest binary version from

The current release is version 1.3

Store the file in your /tmp directory and extract it:

   gzip -d jakarta-ant-1.3-bin.tar.gz
   tar -xvf jakarta-ant-1.3-bin.tar
or with:
   tar -xvzf jakarta-ant-1.3-bin.tar

Copy the directory structure to /usr/local/ant.

In the /usr/local/ant/ directory you can find a doc directory with the latest info.

Documentation is available in HTML format, in the docs/ directory.

From the installion.html file in /docs/manual/:

The binary distribution of Ant consists of three directories: bin, docs and lib Only the bin and lib directories are required to run Ant. To install Ant, choose a directory and copy the distribution file there (note: this has already been done hereabove). This directory will be known as ANT_HOME. Before you can run ant there is some additional set up you will need to do:

Note: Do not install Ant's ant.jar file into the lib/ext directory of the JDK/JRE(/j2se). Ant is an application, whilst the extension directory is intended for JDK extensions. In particular there are security restrictions on the classes which may be loaded by an extension.

Assume Ant is installed in /usr/local/ant. The following sets up the environment:

   export ANT_HOME=/usr/local/ant
   # export JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/jdk-1.3 # Not needed if already set
   export PATH=$PATH:$ANT_HOME/bin
We suggest you add this also to your /etc/profile file.
